Currently, if you live in Houston and you don’t have a car, your options are pretty limited. You can bum a ride from a buddy, take a ride on one of the newly constructed METRO Light Rail lines, utilize the bike share program started by Mayor Parker, or get really sweaty walking from point A to point B. Thanks to Zipcar, that is about to change.
Zipcar is a carsharing company providing car reservations to its members, billable by the hour or by the day. Founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2000, the company now has more than 810,000 members and offers nearly 10,000 vehicles throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Spain and Austria.
The program is really simple: all you have to do is join, reserve your vehicle online (or on their easy-to-use smartphone app), walk up to your reserved car, wave your magical Zipcard to unlock it and the car is yours to drive. It’s really that easy, and the membership fees are as low as $6 a month. You can chose between sedans, hybrids, vans and more.
On Wednesday of last week, Zipcar announced that 25 zipcars are now parked in reserved spots around Houston. Should this initial rollout go well, they will provide more cars to the Houston area, so if you are a big fan of Zipcar – start using them!
